The law allows private sector participation in electricity distribution. CAIRO, 15 July – President Abdelfattah El-Sisi has ratified the long-promised unified electricity law, which reorganizes the electricity sector on the production, transmission, and distribution levels and gives wider powers to the electricity sector regulator, the Electricity Regulatory Agency (ERA).

The new law allows for private sector participation in the generation and distribution of electricity, through an overhauled licensing and permitting scheme, and introduces the concept of Electricity Markets for the first time in Egypt.
